The Stella Maris Berria is a tuna boat destined for scrapping. However, Iñigo Mijangos and Iñigo Gutiérrez, two members of the NGO Humanitarian Maritime Rescue, have an unusual idea: transform the fishing boat into a rescue boat to save refugees drowning in the Mediterranean Sea. This is how Aita Mari is born.

'Aita Mari' narrates the odyssey, lasting more than two years, of the ship, from its reconstruction to the completion of the first rescue.

After the complicated refitting works, which are completed thanks to the selfless help of workers and volunteers, the crew faces a huge setback: the Government of Spain denies permission to set sail. The documentary unravels the reasons for the bureaucratic obstacles and the European interests that are hidden in the decision to prevent missions like those of the Aita Mari.

Almost a year later, the crew finds a way to unblock the situation and they manage to leave. Once in the Mediterranean, they begin to search for boats in an area guarded by Libya, a failed state. The images show a rescue as well as a tense encounter with a Libyan patrol boat.

'Aita Mari' is the story of the collective effort of a group of anonymous citizens to help people fleeing war and hunger.

The City Plaza was a Hotel in Athens that was forced to close due to the economic crisis in 2008. Now it is a model of self-organization. Forced by the war to flee Afghanistan and after an uncertain journey full of difficulties, Ali and his friends found refuge in this hotel occupied by activists.

They had lived poorly in crowded refugee camps, standing in lines to receive a plate of rice, watching the days go by with nothing better to do than wait. The City Plaza has given them hope and responsibilities, as they themselves organize and decide their future.

The City Plaza has restored hope to their lives.

Mohamed Al Barakat arrived two years ago with his wife and four children to the Zaatari refugee camp, on the Jordanian border and just 10 kilometers from his country, Syria. He left behind a desolate panorama: everything he knew had been swallowed up by the war.  In his new home, a tin cabin, he forgot how to pronounce the words before or back.

For this former truck driver, his present was the countryside and he found a way to turn his destiny around: teaching taekwondo to a generation of children marked by violence.
